A cross-campus collaborative program entitled “Certificate in Sustainable Design Thinking 2023” was held from June 1st to 9th,2023. Thirty-two HKUST students from Clear Water Bay (CWB) and Guangzhou (GZ) Campuses teamed up to identify creative solutions for specific sustainability challenges on both campuses.

Sponsored by The Tung Foundation, this 9-day program provided rare opportunities for students to exchange and collaborate, and to learn from researchers and industry practitioners. Besides gaining knowledge and hands-on experience from developing their projects, students from the two campuses were connected through social activities, project discussions, tour of the new GZ campus, and site visits.  On the last day of the program, the 8 project teams gathered on CWB Campus to present their innovative solutions to VIPs and a panel of judges.  The team “Waterwise” won the top prize with a water-saving device and a water-usage monitoring app which can be applied to student halls and other facilities to promote water conservation.

The Tung Foundation made a generous donation in 2021 to establish the “The Tung Foundation Frontier Fund for Collaboration” in support of the University’s “Unified HKUST-Complementary Campuses” framework.  Mr. Alan TUNG Lieh-Sing, the Trustee of the Foundation, and Guest of Honour at the ceremony, joined the students’ final project pitch and presented the awards for the winning teams. He was delighted to witness the students’ excitement and looked forward to seeing further cross-campus collaboration by students and faculty.
