The lecture received a keen response during the Q&A session covering questions from technical knowledge to experience sharing with student on career path as a scientist.
With the generous support from the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation, Professor Yi Cui from Stanford University delivered the “Otto Poon Lecture: Reinventing Batteries Through Nanoscience” at HKUST on 18 Dec 2023. As a preeminent researcher of nanotechnologies for better batteries and other sustainability materials technologies, Professor Cui gave audience a glimpse of different materials design and materials for low-cost large scale stationary energy storage; the use of cryogenic electron microscopy for understanding thermodynamic, kinetic and structural information of battery chemistries.
Professor Cui is the Director of Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University and also Fortinet Founders Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Energy Science and Engineering. His high academic reputation has drawn over 100 enthusiastic faculty, students and external guests to join the lecture. The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session that covered a wide range of topics, from technical knowledge to sharing experiences on the career path of a scientist, which engaged students and fostered a sense of curiosity and learning.
The Otto Poon Charitable Foundation, established by Ir Dr Otto Poon, the Executive Director and Chairman of ATAL Engineering Group, donated HK$100 million to the University in 2018 to support its faculty and their work on environment, technology and innovation.
