Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or not, come join this talk to learn about the environmental and health impact of flying and the latest noise reduction methods and technology. Noise generated during aircraft take-off and just prior to landing in particular is not only an environmental hazard but also adversely affects aircraft performance. The problem is particularly acute in Asia Pacific as development is often coupled with a lack of regulation. HKUST recently introduced a new degree program in aerospace engineering, and will soon be in possession of a state-of-the-art aeroacoustic research tunnel. The speaker who is an expert in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics will share with you some interesting information which you may not know about aircrafts and give an overview of his work at HKUST.

Professor Xin Zhang is the Swire Professor of Aerospace Engineering at HKUST. His research occupies the fast lane: aircraft aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, and racing car aerodynamics and performance. His major focus is finding ways to alleviate a huge problem that affects ordinary people -- aircraft noise. Prof Zhang, who joined HKUST in January 2015, was formerly and very notably director of the Airbus Noise Technology Center at the University of Southampton, the first center of this kind in the world. His role at HKUST is to develop the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering as a center of excellence for aeronautics and aeroacoustics. The reduction of aircraft noise will be one of the key aspects of his research; noise generated by airplanes has a major impact on ordinary people’s lives and is detrimental to health. He gained a BEng in aerospace engineering in 1979 from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, completed his PhD in fluid mechanics from the University of Cambridge in 1984. He is a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
