Tech For Social Good

by Mr. Albert AU, BEng (1995) and MBA (2003)

Technology has been used to raise productivity and growth since the Industrial Revolution, but today it has a far wider role.  As people become more globally aware, they expect technology to improve their social, environmental and economic outcomes.  So how can we ensure that today's tech developments empower citizens and create real social impact?  Albert will review the key elements and challenges of a “Tech for Social Good” approach, citing local examples and referencing his own transformation from a health-tech specialist and start-up founder into a social entrepreneur.

by Mr. Danny TAO, BEng (2012) and MPhil (2015)

Boating might seem a rather leisurely and lo-tech pursuit, but the latest technological innovations are opening up whole new horizons for keen mariners, as well as helping the planet.  Founded in 2012 in Hong Kong by four HKUST graduates, ePropulsion is dedicated to developing intelligent and sustainable marine propulsion systems.  It has now become a world-leading supplier of small electric outboard motors and boat power systems.   Danny will talk about the history of ePropulsion and how its innovative products are changing the boating industry.

From Side Project To International Charity

by Ms. Fion LEUNG, BBA (2010)

Sharing your knowledge and experience with others is not only educational – it can also prove a valuable way of helping society.  That’s the concept behind Time Auction, started by Fion as a side project in 2014, in which prominent leaders are invited to donate a few hours of their time to inspire and connect with young audiences, who in turn pay for their places in volunteer hours.  Fion will share her story of how her team grew their movement into a seven-city international operation by being resourceful and sincere.
